Mass Merchandiser Sales Trends: Walmart, Target, Costco and Value Retailers
Download the Mass Merchandiser Quarterly Analysis
Mass merchandisers entered 2026 with continued sales momentum as warehouse clubs, value retailers and ecommerce-enabled operators captured a growing share of consumer spending. RetailStat’s quarterly analysis compares recent performance across Walmart, Target, Costco, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Five Below, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and other major mass and value retailers.
The results reflect an increasingly divided consumer market. Higher-income households continue to support discretionary spending, while budget-conscious shoppers remain focused on value, food and essential purchases. Walmart and the warehouse clubs benefited from traffic, digital sales and convenience, while several dollar and specialty value chains used pricing and merchandising changes to support sales and margins.
The report also examines Target’s early signs of stabilization following several weak quarters, alongside the growing importance of ecommerce, same-day fulfillment and retail media. Looking ahead, back-to-school spending, tariff refunds, difficult sales comparisons and changing household finances could produce very different results across the sector.
