Holiday retail sales are expected to reach record levels in 2026, but are consumers actually buying more? The National Retail Federation (NRF) forecasts November and December retail sales will increase 4.2% to $1.013 trillion, while Mastercard projects 5.5% growth. Despite the strong headline numbers, inflation, elevated energy costs and continued pressure on household budgets could make this a challenging holiday shopping season for retailers. Higher prices, rather than increased purchasing volume, are expected to account for much of the growth.
Consumer spending trends also point to a more selective holiday shopper. With shoppers prioritizing discounts, starting their holiday shopping earlier and increasingly using buy now, pay later (BNPL) services and AI shopping tools, retailers are competing harder for holiday dollars. Early promotional events from Amazon, Walmart and Target have already accelerated the holiday retail calendar, while Black Friday and Cyber Monday are expected to drive significant e-commerce sales.
